Last month the Milford home of Kirk Garland, a paramedic, was severely damaged in a fire. On Aug. 1 Bedford Deputy Fire Chief Mark Klose presented Garland with a check for $500 from the New Hampshire Police, Fire and EMS Foundation, an organization started in 2006 to help public safety responders and their families.

Garland, his wife and their three children are living in a hotel and hope to rent a house soon, he said.
